Your Yin Yang

Our culture tells us a lie: that in all experiences we must choose between binary opposites. Yes/no. Good/bad. Left/right. Win/lose. But ancient wisdom shows us that in fact our wellbeing lies in the confluence of seemingly oppositional aspects of ourselves. That confluence is represented in the Taoist symbol of the yin-yang.

In this performance class, we will explore what oppositional archetypes are present in our lives. For instance, in my life I am constantly mediating between “father” and “shaman.” I try not to choose between them, but rather look for ways they can each express themselves without denying the other. In class, we will become acquainted with the basic Taoist principles of yin and yang, and we will discover and define our yin and yang archetypes as best we can. Then we will bring these yin-yang archetypes to life and improvise within them. We will teach others to play one or the other so we can do scenes with them. And we will mingle with others’ yins and yangs and perhaps learn something delightful and profound from those encounters. Class will include:

  • relaxed check in, and vocal/physical warm up.

  • an exploration of “contemplative performance” - coming from a meditative place of stillness before we inhabit our vision.

  • opportunities to use journaling, collage and other artistic forms to explore and express the binary poles at work in your life.

  • use of the “red square” to define a sacred space for creative exploration.

  • guided instruction and support in improvisation - making strong offers, developing character, leading and following.

  • commitment to a safe space, with a shared understanding of boundaries and accomodations.
